Dancer Bio

From an early age, Michelle has always been captivated by the enchanting world of dance. “There was always something in the way people moved that felt magical” she states. Transitioning from an admirer to an active participant, Michelle took her first steps into the dance world at the age of 15, enrolling in a beginner-level dance class during her freshman year at Centennial High School, in Howard County Maryland. This nurturing environment became the perfect space for Michelle's growth and development as a dancer.

Undeterred by her lack of prior experience, Michelle eargly pursued her goals. By her second year, she had achieved the level of a Junior company dancer, balancing her involvement in cheerleading and drill team. As senior year approached, Michelle found herself assuming leadership roles as the Senior Dance Company Captain, Cheer Captain, Drill Team Choreographer, and President of the National Dance Honor Society. These positions gave her the opportunity to co-direct her own performance showcase. She also made regular appearances on the show "It's Academics" in support of her school's academic team, and performed in Columbia’s 50th celebration at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Moreover, Michelle's skills extended beyond performance and leadership, as she showcased her choreography at Disney World and the Howard County Dance Festival.

Michelle's dance journey continued at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in dance on the Linehan Scholars Award, an arts scholarship. At UMBC, she honed her skills in Modern dance (Limon, Graham, Cunningham, Horton), Ballet, and Contemporary styles, while also performing at notable venues like The Kennedy Center, American College Dance Association Gala, Baltimore Light Festival, Baltimore Dance Project and the RAW artist showcase at the Fillmore. Alongside her academic pursuits, Michelle secured scholarships to attend reputable summer intensives, including the American Dance Festival and Paul Taylor Summer Intensive.

While Michelle thrived in collaborative creative endeavours, she also found immense joy in pursuing her own artistic endeavours. Her choreographic works, such as "unBOUNDED" and "space witho(U)t," showcase her ability to craft movement into stories. In another creative venture, Michelle organised her own dance intensive called ELEVATE, where she brought together dance professionals from diverse backgrounds to mentor and nurture the next generation of artists.

In February 2021, Michelle embarked on a new chapter in New York City, shifting her focus from Concert Dance to Commercial dance. Despite the physical distance, she remained connected to her academic pursuits by continuing her modern training at UMBC through virtual classes. She demonstrated her commitment to her craft by graduating a semester early in December of 2021. In January of 2023, she was accepted into Broadway Dance Center's Independent Training Program, dedicating her efforts to training in Jazz, Theatre, Heels, and Street styles.

Michelle's talents have been featured in various commercials and music videos, collaborating with artists and brands such as Cool Company, Covergirl, Charlotte Tilbury, Thayers, Kiehl’s, Wiley Edge, Rowdy, Buzzfeed, Dancebody, Netflix, and Spotify, among others. As she continues her dance journey, Michelle looks forward to furthering her growth as an artist and creator while connecting with communities who share her deep passion for the art of dance.

Artist Statement

I find inspiration in the creative process of investigating movements that explore the possibilities of storytelling through abstractions of narratives that reflect the human experience. I produce works that allow me to draw from my external sphere in hopes of expanding the influence of dance in the world; this is because I believe that movement is a language in which can be understood in multi-faceted ways.

I am driven by authenticity, vulnerability, and love—this is mirrored in my creative approach, the final work, and my relation to the artists. I have always been interested in the exploration of the body in correlation to time and space, and how they work in tandem to create energy that drives a piece into a new depth.

Art has power to connect, inspire and empower. Thus, my goal as an artist is to form a world where my works’ narrative and the audience can find a route to unity and understanding where the tangible world fades and the beauty within the mind, body and soul can flourish.
